As a Community Market Garden we are proud to offer the farm as a resource for individuals wishing to come along to volunteer occasionally or regularly, for a few days, a few weeks or longer.
Working alongside us on the fields can be a great way to learn some of the skills involved in growing Organic vegetables at a community-scale. It can also be a rewarding and inspiring opportunity to learn more about Community Supported Agriculture in a UK context.
We offer regular volunteer opportunities on our Thursday harvest days – when we harvest, pack and deliver all of the produce for our 130+ members. This can be one of the most fun and diverse days of the week where you can get to meet some of our long-standing regular volunteers and get a sense of CSA in action. Typically our Thursday volunteers start at our main growing site from 9am and work through to 3-4pm depending on the time of year. We provide tea/coffee and pastries at 11am and a shared lunch at 1pm – you are also welcome to take home a box of fresh vegetables.
During the season from April-October we also welcome volunteers who would like to stay for a few days or more to gain experience of the additional work involved in growing Organic field-scale veg. Our work schedule varies from month to month but usually involves a mixture of; propagation, polytunnel jobs, field-cultivations, transplanting, weeding and harvesting. Volunteers are welcome to camp at our covered-cropping site where our apprentices also live. It’s a tranquil rural site with spring water on tap, a field-kitchen and a compost loo – with a fantastic river-swimming spot a short walk away.
We are happy to to support volunteers to make as much of the opportunity as possible – talking throughout the course of our work and answering questions on the practicalities and politics of Organic horticultural production, Community Supported Agriculture and local food systems. Volunteers are also welcome to help themselves to as much fresh veg from the fields as they like for cooking their own meals. Regrettably we are unable to offer support with additional food and and travel costs – however our longer-term volunteers typically find the experience extremely informative and rewarding.
If you are interested in any volunteering opportunities at Chagfood please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org to introduce yourself and your interest in the farm – ideally also including suggested dates when you would like to come along. If you have any specific questions please also feel free to call Ed on 07858 381539.
